 Our History & Our Creator

 aboutus2.jpg

It was 1986 and a lonely shack stood on State Road, empty, surrounded by weeds. Owner of EDEN, Dee Dice, had a three year old sprout business on the island. Inspired by a trip to Indonesia and the luscious colorful markets there, she decided to start a business with healthy fruits and vegetables in a beautiful environment. The name Eden was decided for this business and so it was created at the site of the lonely shack. Since then it has been an ever evolving project.

In 1988 the first plant delivery arrived and after that Dee's evergrowing interest in plants has taken over the business. During the years, different buildings were added along with different product lines. It is hard to believe now that Eden didn't even carry pottery for years. Also different business have come and gone through Eden. At one point in time Eden had a a complete bakery and food service kitchen, a landscaping business and design consultation business, a service of cut flowers and flower arrangements for weddings and special events, a garden antique business and many others. We are proud to be the seeds for many other businesses on the island.

Owner, Dee Dice has a nutrition degree from theaboutus3.jpg University of Connecticut and wrote a food and nutrition column for 6 years before starting Eden in 1986. It only took a few years to discover that plants and gardening were a perfect addition to the store. She studied landscape design at the Radcliffe Landscape Design Program in Boston for two years, before she was delightfully interrupted by the birth of her daughter Sienna. In 2004, Louisa was born and was adopted by  Dee and big sister Sienna. After two trips to Guatemala, she finally came home to the Vineyard in September of 2006. They live happily in Vineyard Haven and like traveling in the off season.
